How To Protect Your Flooring From Your Plants

Plants are the best low-maintenance pets, and though they don’t require quite the same amount of care as a living animal, they can still make a mess! Unfortunately, your floors will take the majority of the damage and the messes left behind by your plants.

How To Ensure That Your Plants And Your Flooring Are Happy!

Plants are happiest in earthenware terra cotta planters with proper drainage holes on the bottom. However, as drainage holes can cause water leakage, it’s crucial to put a saucer or plate underneath the pot to prevent water seepage.

Though you may try your best to protect your flooring against damage, earthenware pots are naturally porous which can make it hard to protect your flooring adequately. As water drains into your saucer, you may still have to deal with water rings left behind by the porous material. Unfortunately, water marks may permanently damage your flooring unless special care is taken. It is easy to handle this problem by using a plastic tray, cork coasters, metal plant stands or plant hangers.

Avoid Dragging The Plants!

Regardless of your flooring material, whether wood, laminate or vinyl, it is best to avoid dragging your plants across the floor. Paying attention to your flooring will prevent damage, scuff marks or stains. If you need to move a heavy plant, make sure that you ask a loved one to help. Better yet, use a plant dolly to move it across your flooring to protect against undue damage.

Never Overwater Your Plants!

Overwatering your plants is a very real problem, even if you have the best of intentions. The overflowing water can easily seep out of your saucer and cause flooring damage. The moment you notice that you have seeping water, make sure you clean it up to protect your flooring. Of course, if you know you love having plants around the house, choosing a waterproof flooring material is also a solid idea. Regardless of the material you choose as a coaster for your plants, always ensure that the bottoms are free of water and completely dry. The only way you can protect against future flooring damage is by opting for a waterproof type flooring.

Plants Are More Than Decorations

Though they are a fantastic decoration in your home, plants offer many advantages! They add a natural element that makes a room both cozy and inviting. Most importantly, plants are able to help eliminate stress, improve indoor air quality, and enhance your concentration– plants are sometimes better than pets, and certainly easier to care for!
